My SWOT Analysis

Strengths

  • When in a public speaking setting, I am articulate, confident, and able to communicate my intended message or idea clearly.
  • I have a strong dedication and drive for my work when I am passionate.
  • I am good at organising/prioritising, especially in regard to schedules and when doing many tasks at once.
  • I am an idea generator; I am great at coming up with multiple relevant ideas in regard to team collaboration.
  • I am versatile and can perform in any role within a production.
  • I can take criticism well and apply it to my craft as desired.
  • I am a natural born leader and am able to instruct large groups of people.
  • I am able to be in charge of many tasks, especially when backstage.
  • Within a fast-paced environment, I remain calm and complete tasks with ease.
  • I can multitask within a work environment.
  • I have great networking capabilities and have already maintained industry relationships.
  • I can take direction easily, and encourage it.
  • I am a fast leaner and can pick up skills as I need.

weaknesses

  • I come from a low-income background which means I have no financial support from family members.
  • I struggle to budget and save money.
  • I can get easily distracted especially if another project interests me more.
  • Occasionally, I get overwhelmed when taking on too many tasks.
  • As I am a natural leader, I can be overpowering as I get excited and take control.
  • I tend to push myself further than I can maintain and burn out easily, I become tunnel minded.
  • I struggle with my health and fitness, and staying healthy.
  • I find it hard to balance work, study, and regular life.
  • I am a stubborn minded person, especially when it comes to projects that I’m passionate about.
  • I struggle to compromise but am learning.
  • I can be impulsive and act with no knowledge, which puts me in difficult situations.

opportunities

  • As auditions are online now, they are open globally meaning less travel to just audition.
  • Social media is a great way to promote my own personal brand and work such as on platforms like TikTok or Instagram
  • I have access to facilities & equipment while at QUT such as rehearsal rooms.
  • There is a strong demand for the theatre in today’s society meaning opportunities may arise.
  • I have access to acting workshops in Brisbane such as at the Australian Actors Studio (Australian Actors Studio, 2023). Additionally, there are websites that list workshops all over Brisbane such as ‘nothing ever happens in Brisbane’ (Dombay, 2023).
  • There are courses on stage management, production & such as NIDA’s ‘Stage Management Essentials’ course, although in NSW they also offer online courses such as a ‘Producing for Theatre and Live Performance’ (National Institute of Dramatic Arts, n.d.-b).

threats

  • There is low funding for women in the industry, with women receiving significantly less allocated funding in comparison to the number of women applying (Lally & Miller, 2012).
  • Whilst there is a strong demand for theatre and my craft, there aren’t enough facilities to accommodate for many projects causing a lack of opportunities. In regard to musical theatre performers earning money, they are limited to the big five stages across Australia, making getting cast in a paid show very difficult (Huntsdale, 2023).
  • As I come from a low-income background, I struggle to afford the costs of travel for auditions and developing projects.
  • Australia far away from other theatre and job markets such as the film scene in Los Angeles and the theatre market in New York City.
  • I will have to relocate for in-person courses on production work (directing, stage managing ect) as most are located at NIDA in NSW (National Institute of Dramatic Arts, n.d.-a).
  • There is a lack of workshops in Brisbane for production work, there are mainly just acting workshops available.
