My 5 year plan

Career Goal:

In five years, I aim to be working steadily anywhere in the theatre industry, striving towards operating my own theatre company.

2024

January - June

July - December

Skills

 

  • In the beginning of 2024, I aim to expand my knowledge on directing processes and learn to direct large groups of people. There are masterclasses available to learn this such as with Jodie Foster with Masterclass which is a 4-hour course on film/theatre directing (Masterclass, 2023)
  • Focus on my LinkedIn as it is an important form of self-promotion.
  • To extend my improvisation skills, I will attend weekly QUT Theatre Sports.
 
 

 

  • I aim to improve my digital design skills on programs such as blender and photoshop, by practicing and exploring new features as I already have some knowledge in this. This will allow me to explore my marketing interest and have the skills to create marketing posters and anything required in that field. This is especially useful in relation to my goal of operating my own theatre company. Beginning in September of 2024 with SAE is a diploma of graphic design which I can undertake in order to develop these skills (SAE: Creative Media Institute, 2023).
  • Utilise my social media skills to promote myself and my work, continuously working on my image and personal website.

Experience

  • I aim to take part in 3 productions whether that be performance or production to further my experience in my field and built my networking connections.
  • I would love to work for new theatre companies throughout the year that I have not worked with before to explore alternate options of how to operate a theatre company, additionally building my networking.
  • I aim to have more stage-managing experience to solidify my skills and become transdisciplinary
  • As university auditions are around this time of year, I aim to improve my audition skills. The Griffith University Conservatorium offer audition workshops, although they are specifically for their acting and musical theatre courses. I believe this course will still give aid my experience and improve my audition skills (Griffith University, n.d.).
  • I would love to volunteer for the theatre/arts section of The Woodford folk festival to build connections and my experiences as I have never done this before (Woodford Folk Festival, n.d.).
 
 

Study

  • As a part of my Drama Course at QUT, I will have the Scenography minor and will take the Unit KRB120 Scenography 1: Introducing Performance Design (Queensland University of Technology, 2024).
  • Continuing on with my Scenography minor, I will take the unit KRB121: Creating Worlds (Queensland University of Technology, 2024).
  • I will explore marketing courses to learn how to promote myself and gain the skills to promote my future theatre company, additionally gaining skills for any section of the industry. The Australian Marketing Institute offers a marketing course that I may undertake (Australian Marketing Institute, 2023).

skills

  • I would love to develop my skills in website design to further my own professional website’s facilities and accessibility. I will undertake the ‘Design Biz’ bootcamp by Anna Dower which offers mini courses, e-courses, modules and more to enhance my self-promotion skills and website design capabilities (Dower, 2023)
  • Video and photo editing is a great skill to have as it can assist in developing your personal brand, I aim to improve my skills in this by taking Video Skills Training workshops which can be done face to face in any state in Australia. This teaches you how to set up equipment and how to edit it (Video Skills Training, n.d.)

Experience

  • To further my experience and industry networks I will enrol in a QUT career mentoring program to gain further knowledge of the industry and set realistic goals for my career (Queensland University of Technology, n.d.).
  • I aim to be in a show at the Vena Cava Freshblood Festival or alternatively write or direct a play to be a part of this (McLeod, 2023).
 
 
  • As I have knowledge about the design aspects of a production, I would love to be hired on a show specifically for costume or set design, as I enjoy this aspect and would love to develop my experience.
  • Being involved in theatre backstage work will allow me to learn the inner workings of productions and develop my knowledge.
  • Being a part of a student film would extend my experience as I am yet to be in one.
  • Attend the creative industries ball or similar events to enhance my networking.

study

  • Whilst in my final year of my Drama Course at QUT, I will take the Entertainment minor, specifically the unit of CDB101: Managing Media and Entertainment which will provide me knowledge about content producing industries (Queensland University of Technology, 2024).
 
 
  • Continuing in my course at QUT, for my second semester I will take the unit CYB106: Global Media and Entertainment Industries within the Entertainment Minor.
  • Alternatively, whilst I’m still at QUT I can undertake the Digital Media Management minor, specifically CCB202: Social Media, Self and Society (Queensland University of Technology, 2024).

skills

  • As a graduate of QUT’s Bachelor of Fine Arts (Drama), I aim to further my skills in performance by taking masterclasses, workshops and consistently focusing on it (Australian Actors Studio, 2023).
  • I have always considered creating a YouTube presence for myself, vlogging or just general lifestyle content, this will allow for my personal promotion to increase.
  • I would love to explore my passion for Scriptwriting, as I never have trusted my ability. To do this I may complete a Certificate of Script Writing with Australian Online Courses (Australian Online Courses, n.d.).
  • Additionally, the New York Film Academy Australia offers a Screenwriting Course which is available online or in the Gold Coast (New York Film Academy Australia, n.d.)

Experience

  • Performing in more than 2 productions will allow my performance experience to expand.
  • Sign up to newsletters and websites discussion opportunities and theatre.
  • In terms of a job in the industry, I aim to maintain a steady job while also jumping from projects when they are presented.
  • The most beneficial experience to my goals I believe is working within a Theatre Company, especially on production teams as that is what I aspire to continue.
  • Attain an agent for acting work and sign with an agency.
  • I aim to keep producing scripts and getting feedback from other industry writers to improve my skills.
  • Working on my peer’s projects will allow me to maintain work, while strengthening my networks.

study

  • I aspire to undertake further study in performance such as the 1-year Diploma of Stage and Screen performance at The National Institute of Dramatic Arts (NIDA, 2023)
  • Additionally, I can enrol in The RAW Company’s Certificate IV in Musical Theatre to develop my performance skills (RAW, n.d.).

skills

  • I would be interested in post-production elements and learning about technical production, gaining knowledge about sound and lighting design and operation to aid in my stage-managing skills. A technical production course at NIDA offers both sound/lighting knowledge but also development as a stage manager (NIDA, n.d.).
  • Continue developing my social media presence and personal website. Becoming a UGC creator can assist in this, while financially supporting my theatre endeavours.

Experience

  • I desire to gain more performance experience; I will attain this over the next two years by actively auditioning and being involved in plays/musicals within the Brisbane and Sunshine Coast Community.
  • In my personal time I would love to be exploring the film/play ideas I’ve created over the years and developing scripts for them.
  • Apply for internships with the Queensland Performing Arts Centre (QPAC), specifically within Publicity (Queensland Performing Arts Centre , n.d.).

 

  • Attending Brisbane Writers Festival Programs to further improve my scriptwriting.
  • Maintaining a presence at industry professional events, workshops, developments and presentations allows me to work among industry professionals and learn about the theatre industry.

  • I aim to develop my stage management skills by undertaking a course at NIDA called ‘Stage Management Essentials’. This course teaches the standards procedures, essential tasks, and the skills needed such as calling cues (NIDA, 2023)
 
 
  • Will explore more new options for study in the year, specifically in performance and directing.

  • I will continue working on my discipline specific skills and developing these. To do so I aim to find a professional industry job as a free-lancer but frequent collaborator with a theatre company, whether that be stage managing or costume design. This will aid in my financial stability.
  • Working on a range of projects and shows will allow me to explore and solidify my skills, especially in regard to my performance, and production skills.

Experience

 

  • I find that internships are a great way to build connections and prove yourself as a valuable asset in the industry. I will explore internship options on shows and within companies if I am not already in a stable theatre company job.
 
 
 
  • I aim to achieve theatre awards such as the BILLE BROWN AWARD for BEST EMERGING ARTIST at The Matilda Awards that is presented to artists in the early stages of their career, and includes artists across all individuals such as actors, designers, directors, etc (The Matilda Awards, n.d.).
 
 

Study

  • Further study in marketing and business as by this year I want to be developing my theatre company
 
  • There are always workshops available to attend for any specific interest, I aim to attend many depending on my specific focus for this year, whether that be production work, directing or producing, or performing.
